Conversations with Ward 2 Residents
I’ve spent June and July walking the Ward visiting every home talking to you about your issues and leaving a brief introduction post card. Below are a couple of the frequently mentioned issues … please click here to read them all “Conversations with Ward Two Residents”
Fire Mitigation
I want to see coordinated efforts across Golden, Mines and Jeffco Open Space. I want to see an online map depicting where Fire Mitigation is going on from all three groups with a description of what is being done. Residents can then use that information to approach their homeowners insurance companies and hopefully reduce their rates. For the current plans on Fire Mitigation by the city of Golden go to this link – it includes maps.
Increase spend on Fire Mitigation – whether that’s the Goat Brigade or manually clearing brush and dead trees. Again, coordinated with Mines and Jeffco.
Fire Evacuation
I want to understand what the evacuation plans are for Mines and all the neighborhoods in Golden. I want our experts to evaluate enhancements particularly for neighborhoods that have choke points.
Concern about speeding in neighborhoods
Many residents expressed concern about speeding in neighborhoods. Where is the speed camera car? Can Golden outfit a second one? Even if the speed camera car isn’t available, how about putting up the warning signs in order to ‘encourage’ people to slow down?
Gerchard – One of the best parts of living in Golden is being outside, kids playing in their yards, people walking… To keep everyone safe, I support enhanced use of the speed camera car. The cost for a second car is approximately $90k. I would support outfitting a second one if funds are available.
Communication
People have told me that they don’t feel like the city is listening to them.
Gerchard – I commit to walking the ward at least twice a year (spring and fall). I commit to answering all my phone call messages, text messages, and email messages. I will be available to attend and talk at resident events like the Beverely Heights Octoberfest. When projects come up at city council, I will always ask our staff how has the community been engaged and what was the feedback. Every issue has multiple sides. I will listen to all sides before making up my mind.
Fortunately, I am retired. I have the time, inclination, and skills to listen to what you have to say. I want to help.

Topics include – Lookout Mtn Rd Closures, Orecart Expansion, Growth, Dangerous Pedestrian/Street Intersections, Golden Terrace Zoning, Wasted Sprinkler Water, Update on Heritage Rd/ Hwy 6 Intersection, Parking Noise, Orecart Expansion, Trail Connectivity…
New Endorsements…
Today (10/26) Paul Haseman, current Ward 2 Council Representative, has endorsed me to replace him for the Ward 2 Council Representative.
Earlier this month (10/12) Jacob Smith (former Mayor of Golden) and Bill Fisher (City Council Representative for Ward 4) have both endorsed me for the Ward 2 City Council position.
Thankyou Paul, Jacob and Bill, I appreciate your support.
See my earlier endorsements including Lisa Vitry, Representative Brittany Pettersen and local residents on my Endorsement Page.
Preparing for the City Council Role…
Starting with my retirement in 2020 I started working on my local network in Golden, Jefferson County, at the State, and at the Federal level. I wanted to establish a network that I could call on to enhance my ability to get things done.
For the 2024 election I worked for the Jefferson County Election Board as a Rover – a small group of people who helped program and maintain the election tablets and other remote infrastructure.
Starting in 2025 I attended every council meeting reviewing the prereads, taking notes, and watching how the council reached decisions.
I held one on one meetings with city staff to better understand how the city worked and express concerns that I heard from residents.
I joined the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee (CBAC) to better understand the city budget, city revenue and how that process works.
I virtually attended a variety of city committee meetings in order to get an overview of our multifaceted city.
I attended meetings with Mines, NREL, and Quantum Commons to better understand the opportunities and challenges they bring to the city.
I attended city sponsored listening meetings where residents and business and provided feedback/suggestions to the city.
I attended the Shelton Elementary Cafe where a group of city leaders including city council members have a monthly brainstorming session on how to enhance Shelton.
But the most important preparation has been the last three months walking the ward, visiting every home in Ward 2, talking to you, asking what the issues are you are most concerned with.
If I didn’t get to talk to you, I hope you found the small postcard I left at your door.
Walking the Ward
I feel the best way to reach out to everyone in Ward Two is to walk the ward visiting every home across the ward.
My plan this summer has been to make three rounds through the ward leaving a post card sized campaign literature at your front door.
During June/July I finished round one – I hope you saw the postcard at your door.
It’s September 19th and I have finished the Round 2 walk. Today I visited the parts of Golden Ridge that I can access. Check your door/gate for a postcard from me.
Again, thank you for the warm welcomes and great conversations.
If you haven’t had a chance to meet me and share your views, please give me a call or email in order to setup a time to visit.
I finished round 3 of my walking the ward on Monday, October 27th. As always send me an email or call if I missed you and you have any questions.
Donate to help food needs in our city!
Instead of donating to the campaign, consider donating to the Golden Pantry & Thrift or your favorite charity. They can use the extra help, now more than ever.
If you are interested in numbers check out the campaign finance reports for all the candidates by clicking here.
Heads-up – I think I received the most individual donations from inside their ward. Supporters donated about $1000 and I contributed about $1000 for a total campaign of about $2000. Thanks for your support.
